Spontaneous Fasting Leads to Health and Peace
By Guo Tan, Hong Kong
I lived in Avalokiteshvara Temple on Lantau Island for over a decade. I decided to leave the temple and embark on a pilgrimage to the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. Along the way, I met a dharma sister who used to suffer from severe hyperthyroidism. She’d had a very close brush with death; however, through Bodhi Meditation’s practices, she was blessed with a speedy recovery. I was awed by this wonderful method of cultivation. The dharma sister’s experience made me decide to find out more about Bodhi Meditation.
Experiencing Meditation Practices
In November 2013 I took part in the Bodhi Meditation 8.5-Day Health & Happiness Retreat. I was profoundly moved by the unique power of these methods. Practicing The Meditation of Greater Illumination prompted me to begin spontaneous fasting. Despite having almost no fluid intake, my body eliminated copious phlegm and sweat. I felt that the toxins hidden in my body were slowly being discharged. The fasting persisted for 12 days and I dropped 45 pounds, going from 175 to 130 pounds.
Toward the end of December, I joined the Bodhi Meditation Second Level Retreat and experienced another round of spontaneous fasting, this time for 11 days. My weight further reduced by about five pounds and my potbelly was replaced by a slender waistline. I had a total weight loss of approximately 50 pounds after two periods of spontaneous fasting. I looked radiant, and felt completely rejuvenated and relaxed from head to toe.
In March 2014, I participated in the 108-Day Energy Bagua Class and started to walk Energy Bagua every morning. This practice provided me with abundant energy for my daily tasks. After completing the class, I continued to walk Energy Bagua every day. I’ve noticed that on the occasional days when I am too busy to practice, my energy level is lower. Not only does Energy Bagua give me the verve to move as swiftly as an arrow, I also walk with strong, steady strides, including up the stairs. I’m more relaxed and at peace than ever before.
Walking a Bodhisattva Path
I feel extremely fortunate to volunteer at the center, devoting my time to cleaning, cooking and helping people with light-offerings. Each day is lived in joy. After more than a decade of searching, I finally found the life I had longed for — a tranquil, blissful and charitable existence. I vow to use my remaining years to follow Grandmaster JinBodhi and learn more remarkable practices, and to be a bodhisattva who helps all sentient beings.
