Health We Can Hear The Power of Music
By Melia McClure
Music is a Universal language. Nada Brahma, a Hindu maxim meaning ‘all is sound,’ captures the primordial essence of sound vibration. Cultures and faiths around the globe describe life In our world originally emerging from some manner of sound, and music has been powerfully entwined with spiritual, emotional and physical wellness since time immemorial.
Quantum physics and ancient sages agree that everything in existence Is essentially pulsing energy. Mystics and spiritual seekers throughout the ages have related their experiences of this energy, and their collective recounting suggests that energetic vibrations manifest in our hearing awareness as a humming around and within all that Is. Perhaps It is the Divine within each of us longing to return to our Divine Source that gives us such a profound, visceral connection to music. Sound that elicits positive feelings returns us to the sound of our pure consciousness.
Given that music elevates our experience of life, it Is no wonder that harmony and rhythm have always been part of ritual celebrations in every culture. Music connects us to each other, to our heritage, and to our memories. The earliest shamanic healers were well aware of the primordial nature of sound and so used music and sound vibrations to heal the sick and revive flagging spirits. Harmonious sound vibration synchronizes the ‘music of the heart’ — the pulse — with the rhythms of Nature. The unique energetic pattern of each and every person is expressed through the pulse. Traditional Chinese Medicine holds the pulse as a central diagnostic window into the state of the human body, deeming different heart patterns to be indicative of various states of health or disease. Music was considered by ancient healers, and now by a growing number of modern health practitioners, to be one of the most profound Influences on our biological rhythms. Harmonious sound connects quite literally with the heart, a truth to which a multitude of Bodhi practitioners would attest: Grandmaster JinBodhi’s profound healing music has the power to connect with body and soul, facilitating deep emotional and physical wellness.

Research has found that the brain contains a memory system for music that is distinct from its multitude of other neurological systems. In music therapy, treatments can effectively target non-musical functions of the brain by stepping through the doorway of The music memory system.
