Loving Your Own Light

The great poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one’s own sunshine.” To have confidence in the beauty of life, in the goodness of the Universe, we must first have confidence in our own value. Many excel at extending love and generosity to others, but not to themselves. They fail to see that self-love is not only a gift for the individual, it is a gift for the world. Those who honor their own light bring the best of themselves to life, for the betterment of humanity.

Science tells us that the ways in which we stand and walk, our facial expressions, and the words we speak have a radical impact on mood and confidence. Positive action leads to positive emotion. Speaking empowering affirmations daily, as Grandmaster JinBodhi advocates, can connect us to our innate power and worth. As we rise, the world rises with us.

In this issue of Meditation & Health, we celebrate love of self, love of others, and love of Mother Earth. Self-love must, of course, include nurturing the physical body. We bring you simple steps for pain-free knees, and stories of meditators who are standing newly strong in body and mind. Physical health and mental balance strengthen our connection to the natural world. Whether we are reveling in the colors of Nature through botanical dyes or walking barefoot on the sand, our relationship with the Earth can be one of mutual healing.

Let the healing begin. Step out of the shadows and bask in your own sunshine.
